Will there be UPDF recruitment this year?
The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces recruitment is a yearly recruitment exercise for the intake of new personnel. Prior to this, it is certain that UPDF recruitment will be held in 2023.
What are the requirements for UPDF recruitment 2023?
Generally, you have to be a Ugandan citizen between the ages of 18 and 26 years, have the basic form of education, be able to express yourself, have a national identity card, etc.

How Do I Apply for Uganda Forces Recruitment?
To apply for any of the Uganda Forces recruitment, be it Air Force, land force, etc., you have to visit the online application portal to fill out and submit the form.
How Long Does UPDF Training Take?
UPDF recruitment intake has four (4) fundamental stages which are; application, shortlisting, screening and then training.
The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces training usually take about nine (9) months and at most one (1) year.

There’s something I would like you to understand about Uganda Peoples Defence Forces recruitment.
Uganda Peoples Defence Forces is like a unifying name which has sub-sections. What do I mean?
Both Army, Navy, Airforce etc. are classified under Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) and as such, as you want to apply for the recruitment, bear in mind the particular section you wish to attain as it will influence your application process and the kind of information you present to UPDF.
Having known and clarified that, let’s dive into the detail requirements for UPDF recruitment, in other words, if you wish to be employed by UPDF, take note of the following.
General Requirements for UPDF Recruitment 2023/2024
This is more like an entry-level requirement into UPDF, I recommend you try as much as you can to adhere to these criteria.
- The prospective applicant must be a citizen of Uganda
- Not just a citizen but must have a valid means of identification e.g., a National ID
- Applicant must be fit and healthy and have a physical look
- An original copy of the medical report duly signed by a doctor is needed
- Entry level age for both male and female applicants is eighteen (18) to twenty-five (25) years at most thirty (30) years
- Candidate applying must not be married nor have children
- Applicant’s educational level must be at least S.4 (UCE), S.6 (UACE) or its equivalent
- You will have to present the original certificates and also student’s ID card
- Applicant must also provide a letter of recommendation from LC1, LC111, GISOs duly signed
- Applicant should be free of criminal record and project certain moral standards
UPDF Recruitment Requirements for Air Force Candidates
Just as I clarified earlier on, the three subsections under UPDF are the Air force, Army and Navy. Below are the specific requirements for those applying for air force.
Candidate applying must have S.6 biased in Physics, Mathematics and Geography
Candidate should have a degree or diploma in the aviation field such as:
- Pilots with Private Pilot License (PPL), Commercial Pilot License (CPL), or Pilot Instructors.
- Aircraft maintenance engineers category A & C (Engine, Airframe) category X (Electrical and Avionics, Radio and instruments)
- Air Traffic controllers
- Radar Engineers and Radar Operators
- Flight operators
UPDF Recruitment Requirements for Army Candidates
- Candidate must be physically, mentally and medically sound
- Candidate should be able to adhere to the existing army operational regulations
- Candidate applying for the army must not specifically exceed the age of twenty-five (25)
- Those with UCE, degree or diploma can still apply
UPDF Recruitment Requirements for Navy Candidates
Candidate applying must have S.6 biased in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics.
Candidate should have a degree or diploma in marine-related field such as
- Ocean Engineering
- Marine Biology
- Marine Mammal Trainer
- Marine Archeology
- Marine Researcher
- Marine Environment Educator/ Oceanography
- Aquatic Veterinarian

How to Apply for UPDF Recruitment 2023
- First, you’ll visit the UG defence portal http://www.defence.go.ug
- On the menu bar, click UPDF
- Select the category you wish to apply, air force, navy or army
- Rea through the application instructions
- Fill in your bio-data appropriately
- Upload required documents according to the stipulated size
- Go through your application for correction
- Then submit if everything is in order
Note that in all of these, you need an internet-enabled device or you visit any cyber café close to you for possible assistance.
Uganda Peoples Defence Forces Application Deadline
It is also important to know when the UPDF recruitment portal is closing so that you can get all the necessary documents ready and then apply before the stipulated deadline.
For the 2023 UPDF recruitment, the closing date for application is January 5, 2024. The recruitment form will be available from December 19, 2023.
